Check the version before troubleshooting the crew.
The official store supports online co-op with up to 16 players. Patch 1.0.3 explicitly required all crewmates to run the same update to play together. Before investigating a failed join, let Steam finish updating everyone’s installation and compare the versions shown by the game.
This is a compatibility check, not a promise that every connection problem has the same cause. If the problem persists, record the error, who is hosting, and whether other players can join that host. Those details are more useful than repeatedly changing several settings at once.

Which upgrades does the crew share?
Since 1.0.3, everyone uses the host’s Upgrade Matrix. Any player can buy an upgrade for the crew, and older saves keep the highest level already purchased by anyone. The developer’s rule answers the launch-day economy question about who needs to buy a sale bonus.
Agree on the next purchase before anyone clicks. One player can check the collection bottleneck while another checks the receiving machinery; then spend on the shared problem. After buying, compare the new level in that session. Avoid treating a different host’s world as a test of whether the old host’s matrix purchase worked.
The patch’s matrix rule should not be stretched into a blanket claim about every item. Vehicles have their own garage behavior, and the player demonstration specifically distinguishes calling back your own vehicle. Check the relevant object rather than assuming shared upgrades mean identical ownership everywhere.

A practical way to split the jobs.
With two players, try one collector and one builder for the first short line, then swap after the delivery works. With a larger crew, assign a person to each active station or route so there is someone who knows where its dust should go. These are suggested roles, not a required party composition.
A collector watches where the next load comes from. A transport player follows capsules and checks the receiving hatch. A factory player observes power and both processing inputs. Once all three parts work, the same people can return to cleaning. Keeping a permanent conveyor janitor is a sign that the line needs attention.
Before expanding, ask each route owner to show one load reaching its intended destination. This gives the rest of the crew a shared picture of what is working and prevents several players from independently rebuilding the same section.

Can I change another player’s belts?
Patch 1.0.4 allows crewmates to place splitters and mergers on belts built by other players. It also changes mergers to alternate between their inputs. A guide or complaint from launch may therefore describe restrictions that no longer apply.
Coordinate the edit anyway. Tell the collector when you are changing the route, watch the first deliveries after the change, and confirm both incoming branches still move. If a machine stalls despite available power and materials, note that the 1.0.4 notes include a fix for that packing error; verify the running version before dismantling the build.

Plan around the host’s session.
A Steam player asked for persistent servers because they had to wait for a friend to start the game. That is a current player report, not an official dedicated-server specification. For a normal shared session, agree on a host who will be available and choose a clear stopping point together. This guide does not offer a supported method to turn that world into an always-on server.
The host has crew controls in ESC, then Your Crew. The 1.0.3 notes describe kicking, banning and unbanning there; a ban prevents that player from joining that save. Use the intended control carefully instead of confusing a removed player with a connection failure.
Keep the world safe as it grows. The developer added automatic backups outside Steam Cloud in 1.0.4. If a shared session has loading trouble, preserve the files and follow the backup guide before anyone experiments with older game versions.

Questions players ask
What is the maximum player count?
The developer lists online co-op for up to 16 people; a smaller crew or solo session is also supported.
Who can purchase an upgrade?
Since 1.0.3, anyone in the crew can buy a matrix upgrade that applies to the whole crew using the host’s matrix.
Can I run a dedicated server?
The reviewed official sources do not provide a supported dedicated-server setup. Coordinate host availability rather than following an unverified server command.
