Where are the automatic backups?
The 1.0.4 developer notes give this Windows backup location: C:\Users\[user-name]\AppData\LocalLow\DragDropGames\MoonSweepers\Backups. Replace [user-name] with your Windows account folder name. It is the Windows user folder, not your Steam display name.
The backups are stored outside Steam Cloud. That distinction is important when looking for them: the absence of a file in a Steam Cloud view is not proof that no local automatic backup exists. Open the path on the computer that holds the relevant world. This page does not read, upload or modify any of your files.

When are backups made?
According to the 1.0.4 notes, the game keeps up to five backups per save slot. It takes one a minute into a session and then at 30-minute intervals. This is a rolling set, not a promise that every earlier moment of a long-running world remains available indefinitely.
If the world matters to you, preserve a separate copy before experimenting with recovery. Close the game and copy the MoonSweepers folder to another clearly named location. Keep the original files intact. That precaution is general file-preservation advice; it is not a claim that the developer documents a manual restore procedure.
Note the approximate time of the last successful session and the slot involved. Comparing those details with the available files is much safer than picking a file solely because its name looks familiar.

What does the built-in repair do?
Patch 1.0.3 introduced automatic repair during loading, using a backup or recent snapshot, and a check before a save replaces its predecessor. It also fixed large cleaned worlds that appeared corrupt even though the saves were intact. The 1.0.4 notes add repair after a crash on the next start, alongside faster saving on large bases.
After preserving the folder, confirm the game has finished updating and try the affected slot through the normal interface. Read any repair message. A successful load is a chance to inspect the world: check a known station, an upgrade you remember and an existing production route before assuming nothing changed.
Automatic repair depends on the data available to the game. It does not guarantee that every damaged world can be restored or that the most recent minutes survive. Keep the preserved copy if you need to report what happened.

Do not test a new save in an older version.
The 1.0.4 developer warning says saves made in that version cannot be opened by older versions. Downgrading is therefore not a general recovery step for a current save. A file refusing to open in an older build does not by itself establish that the file is corrupt.
For co-op, check the host’s game version as well as the joining players. The 1.0.3 notes explicitly require matching versions. Record which world and host you were using when the issue occurred, especially if the crew regularly joins different people.
Keep game-startup problems separate from world-loading problems. If the application does not reach its menu, inspect the launch troubleshooting guidance; if it starts but one slot fails, preserve that world and focus the report on loading it.

What should you include in a save report?
Describe the last action before the failure, the running version, whether you were the host and whether the game still opens another slot. Include the visible error or repair message and the approximate time. Avoid repeatedly overwriting the affected world while trying unrelated changes.
Do not rename random files or replace the current save with a guessed backup filename based on this guide. The public patch notes establish the backup location and automatic recovery behavior, but do not give a complete manual file-swap procedure. Use the Steam discussion area to seek developer guidance with your preserved evidence.
If the world loads again, make a small, non-destructive check before resuming a long session: find your base, inspect owned upgrades and verify one known route. Recovery is about getting back a usable world, not merely making the loading screen disappear.

Questions players ask
Are automatic backups in Steam Cloud?
The 1.0.4 notes say this backup set is stored outside Steam Cloud in the local Backups folder.
How many backups are kept?
The documented limit is up to five per slot, created one minute into a session and every 30 minutes after that.
Should I downgrade to load an old-looking save?
A save written by 1.0.4 cannot be opened by older versions according to the developer. Preserve files and use the current version’s normal recovery first.
