What the result means
Required machines is the incoming rate divided by one machine’s input capacity, rounded up. Existing capacity is the connected count multiplied by that per-machine rate. A shortfall means this stage cannot accept all of the measured incoming supply under the conditions you entered.
For an illustrative 6 kg/min supply and 2 kg/min per machine, three machines cover the incoming rate. If two are connected, the current capacity is 4 kg/min and the shortfall is 2 kg/min. These are made-up teaching values, not preset game statistics.
Spare capacity is not extra production. It is capacity that the entered supply does not use. The accepted input estimate is the smaller of supply and capacity; it does not calculate processed output, selling price or profit.
Why use measurements instead of a fixed ratio?
Allideat’s Steam review asks for a useful machine-ratio guide. Other players report expensive layout mistakes and processing queues. Community layouts are useful demonstrations, but the reviewed sources do not establish one verified rate table for every machine and condition. This tool lets you check your own observed stage without adopting a disputed blueprint.

Belts, missing secondary inputs, full outputs and power interruptions can all reduce real throughput. Address those first. After adding a machine, observe the line again; the bottleneck may have moved to the next stage.
