What exactly is failing?

Write down the last screen you can reach. A game that never opens, a single world that refuses to load, and a factory that freezes while you switch tools are different problems. Keep that distinction when searching for advice or writing a report.

First let Steam complete the current update, then confirm the version you are actually running. Patch notes describe fixes in a particular build; they do not prove that an earlier installation contains them. In co-op, compare the host’s version with the joining player’s before investigating a lobby failure.

Use a short reproduction: start the game, try the affected action once and record the result. Repeatedly changing graphics options, save files and launch arguments together makes it much harder to identify which change mattered.

Windows with an AMD graphics card.

The 1.0.4 notes say Windows now defaults to DirectX 11 to prevent AMD GPU crashes. They also document -force-d3d12 as an override. That override is not presented as a universal crash fix; adding it can put the game back on the renderer the developer deliberately stopped using by default for this case.

If you previously added a custom DirectX 12 launch option, record it before removing it and test the updated game with its normal default. Change one thing at a time. If the crash remains, include the graphics card, running version, active launch options and where the crash occurs in your report.

This guide does not recommend downloading replacement DLLs or registry fixes from unrelated sites. The source-backed action here is to check the current patch and renderer choice, then report the remaining symptom.

Steam Deck or Linux with Proton.

The same update lists a startup fix for older Proton versions. This gives an affected player a specific reason to update the game before treating the failure as a broken world. It does not establish that every Proton configuration or every Deck performance issue is solved.

Record the Proton version in use and whether the failure happens before the menu or only in one save. If you experiment with another compatibility version, keep the original setting so it can be restored. Do not use a single successful launch as proof that a large existing world or a long co-op session is stable.

The official store’s Windows requirements and a developer’s Proton compatibility fix answer different questions. A patch note is not the same as a complete Linux support specification or a Steam Deck performance guarantee.

If only a saved world fails to load.

Preserve the save folder before trying changes. The developer added automatic recovery in 1.0.3 and expanded backups and crash recovery in 1.0.4. Some large cleaned worlds also had loading problems that the developer said were not actual save corruption.

Follow the dedicated backup guide for the documented folder and schedule. Keep the normal current-version loading process as the first recovery test after preserving your files. Do not downgrade a save created by 1.0.4: the developer explicitly warns that older versions cannot open it.

If another slot opens but the affected world does not, include that distinction in the report. It helps separate an installation-wide launch problem from a world-specific loading failure without deleting either world.

If the problem happens around a large factory.

Patch 1.0.4 lists a freeze fix when switching tools while many robots are working, along with much faster saving on big bases. The earlier 1.0.3 update also reports performance improvements. These are developer-reported changes, not benchmark results from this site.

For a remaining issue, record whether the trigger is autosaving, changing tools, teleporting, driving into the area or merely standing nearby. Note whether it happens as host, as a joining player or in solo play. A reproducible action gives the developer something more concrete than a report that the whole game is slow.

If the application is still running and only the machinery stops producing, use the factory guide instead. Lack of power, a full receiver or a missing processing input can look like a stalled operation without being a software crash. Confirm what has actually stopped before rebuilding or altering the installation.
